FistpumpYES! I only beat you by about a year, and had the same reaction. Every sentence is perfect, every scene resonates backwards and forwards and while it is the ultimate literary fiction it's also FUNNY. But I'm tickled by the people who "couldn't get into" Gilead. Being a wuss, I had the opposite reaction, loving the quiet opening reflections; halfway through I was siezed with a hideous suspicion and said to my husband "Something's going to HAPPEN, isn't it, " and he said "Oh, lots is going to happen." No one who bails has any idea what the book is about or what it becomes. Robinson is very sneaky and she is hella smart. (Oh, I'm so glad you read Housekeeping. Believe it or not, the movie of it is good.)
